Shotokan karate – do is a traditional form of karate developed by Gichin Funakoshi (1868-1957), he himself a teacher and martial artist. Shotokan training typically consists of kihon (basics), kata (forms) and kumite (sparring). Grand Master Funakoshi is known for his famous quote. “The ultimate aim of Karate lies not in victory or defeat, but in the perfection of the character of the participant”.

Shotokan emphasizes character building and self-defense. For children, traditional martial arts such as Shotokan encourages focus and provides a path towards both mental and physical strength, building self-esteem as well as self-discipline.
